Family History

Yesterday I sat with my 95 year old mother as she sorted through items in a safety box. Her eyesight is failing and she needed help with some documents.
I am so glad I did this. I saw their original marriage license from 1943. There were many items related to my fathers military service and training. There was a good variety of items, some real treasures to our family history.
But, one item stunned me that I was not expecting. Wrapped in a paper that was yellowed from age was a lock of reddish brown hair from my grandmother! The note said it was cut in 1924, 96 years ago! This is a unique family treasure full of my grandmothers DNA.
Do you have such a rare item? Do you have a personal item of your deceased love one? Perhaps something that contains their DNA?
This may have been more popular in previous generations, but I would understand obtaining a lock of hair from a loved one today.
Some people feel this is morbid, others find it to be a unique connection to the past. This is another example of how personal and different a grief journey can be for everyone.
What do you think?
